This is the Infiniti Essence, a petrol-electric rear-wheel-drive coupe with 592bhp. It’s a concept, built to celebrate Infiniti’s 20th anniversary, but also to preview the company’s future design themes and environmentally friendly technologies, both of which will be essential if the badge is to conquer the UK market later this year. It’s not, but the petrol-electric drivetrain is a glimpse of Infiniti’s future power units.

The new Mercedes GLA Compact SUV had its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, and is due to go on sale in November. But when it does go on sale, sales will start off with a limited run of GLA Edition 1 cars, just as Mercedes did with the CLA 45 AMG Edition 1, but in the case of the GLA you’ll be able to spec the Edition 1 pack on any GLA model. With a choice of four exterior colours - Cirrus White, Mountain Grey Metallic, Orient Brown Metallic and Designo Magno Mountingrau – the Edition 1 comes with 19″ AMG alloys, bi-xenons, aluminium roof rails, extra chrome, leather flat-bottomed steering wheel, comfort seats and splashes of aluminium trim and stainless steel pedals.

Update 1/12/2009: It looks like Audi has had a change of heart and has now confirmed plans for an S8 for 2011. Update 16/04/2010: And to completely trash this article, we now have confirmation that the 2011 Audi A8 L will come complete with W12. Oh, well.
